Yoga teaches ‘feel good’ techniques

Residents taking advantage of a gentle yoga class at the Manor report they feel better and are more energized.

The gentle yoga class is provided every Monday morning by instructor Jean Ladd. Jean is a retired physical education teacher and has been teaching gentle yoga for nine years.

What is gentle yoga? During the class, residents learn balance, breathing, stretching and safety techniques in case of a fall. The physical and mental stimulation provides long-term benefits. Jean not only teaches at the Manor, she also teaches at the Wichita Senior Center and several other locations.

Each class begins with a warm up routine and a series of floor exercises. Residents who regularly attend the class report they are regaining their strength.

Participants also have learned how to to measure their own progress and development in the class, as they increasingly gain strength and balance. Promoting healthy living is a beneficial side effect of the gentle yoga class.

Another exercise class is offered in the east room at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Friday.

This class is a mixture of not-so-strenuous exercises, including watching a video tape. This is followed by stretch band exercises. The bands are provided by the Manor.

These groups are a good opportunity to meet new people. Exercising also is a wonderful way to maintain and improve health while having fun. Please join us for one our exercise classes. We always have room for more people to exercise with us.

Call Activities Director Amy Myers at (316) 942-7456 if you have any questions about any of the exercise classes.
