The Manor’s mystery trip is back. As a bus full of curious residents were leaving the parking lot of the Manor, residents were given clues so they could guess our destination. Of course, it was guessed right away because our residents know their Kansas facts. We were headed for Abilene, the home of “history, heroes and hospitality.” Located at the junction of Interstate 70 and K-15 highways, Abilene has a proud and colorful history. As the official end of the Chisholm Trail, Abilene has grown from a small cowtown community to a thriving city of 6,800 with a diverse economic base. Thousands of visitors from around the world travel to Abilene each year to tour museums, attractions and mansions in the hometown of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. First we had lunch at the historic Kirby House, which was built in 1885 for bank cashier Thomas Kirby and his family. The cuisine was mouthwatering and fresh. After lunch, we went on a historic trolley tour provided by the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau. There were so many beautiful houses and mansions to see. It was amazing. The Lebold Mansion was built in 1880, the Seely Mansion was built in 1904 and has 25 rooms. The Seely House contains original furniture, a ballroom and a bowling alley. On the way out of town our sweet tooth was telling us to stop at Russell Stover. We enjoyed stopping at the candy factory. Russell Stover, the man after whom the factory is named, started in 1923, selling candy out of his home. Today, there are five factories across the country, which makes Russel Stover the number-one selling boxed chocolate brand in America. We shopped and had some delicious ice cream from the factory’s store. All of us had such a wonderful time, we’ve decided to have another mystery trip this month. Please join us!
