Fishing Trip

Retired minister, Robert "Bob" Hazen's fondest memory is of a visit to Mexico to meet his son's wife and while there, going on a fishing trip where he caught a really big fish. Really.

When Mr. Hazen expressed that he would really like to do this again, the Presbyterian Manor dream team looked for a way to make it happen for him as Mr. Hazen resides in the health care center.

The dream team at Presbyterian Manor seeks to fulfill dreams of residents and consists of volunteers-Leana Scott and Pat Clough, Lottie Miller who is on our advisory committee and employees Pat Barnes, Anjelica Herrera, Greg Schmidt, Stephanie Crabtree, Linda Arbuckle-Ross, Carla Garnica, Gene Kearn, Todd Barstow. Information is gathered from dream interview sheets.

In addition to Mr. Hazen, Emerson Smith and Lee Petty had also expressed a desire to go fishing. These men have not been able to go fishing for years because of health or other barriers. Mr. Smith also lives in the health care center and Mr. Petty resides in an active living apartment.

While a trip to Mexico was not possible, the next best thing was a private pond near Clearwater, Kans. which was a gorgeous place. Mr. Smith described his perfect day which was going fishing with his wife. She passed away last year, but he wanted to go to catch a fish for her. Mr. Petty wanted to go to San Francisco to the Fisherman's Warf to fish and visit his cousin, but he was happy to join us on this fishing trip.

Together, they enjoyed the day with Mr. Hazen bringing in a 13 oz. bass (in honor of his wife), and Mr. Smith caught an 11 oz. bass. While Mr. Petty mostly enjoyed being outdoors, with a little fishing, all in all, they thought the day was, well, a dream come true.

The dream team at Presbyterian Manor was inspired by Second Wind Dreams, an organization that helps grant dreams of seniors to enable them to age with dignity. Some dreams are lifelong, while others are dreams for seeing a special place or family again.
