Residents embrace new e-mail technology

Recent News

Lorena Hauschild and Opal Kruse master the e-mail software designed for people with hearing or physical challenges.

Presbyterian Manor-Sterling residents have been using a new and easy-to-use e-mail software program and touch-screen computer since the beginning of 2009. Resident Lorena Hauschild was the first to learn the program; the biggest benefit for her is being able to type because she has a medical condition that prevents her from holding a pen. Resident Opal Kruse said the biggest benefit for her is being able to speak into the microphone to send messages. She can also listen to, rather than read, her message.

This is a real benefit for those with vision challenges. Residents like the program because it has large "yes" and "no" buttons on its touch screen. Hauschild practices sending e-mail daily to improve her skills and search for more options. She has five children and is able to contact three on a regular basis, along with friends, thanks to the new technology.

The computer and software were made possible through generous donors. If additional donations come in and demand remains high, a larger touch screen may be purchased, as well as an additional computer.
