Home | Recent News | Sterling | Age to Age Series 01 Feb 2007 Age to Age Series will explore aging in six-week series starting February 18March 1, 2005 Aging is a universal truth of life but each person's journey through it is unique. The gifts and challenges of aging will be the focus of a six-week Lenten study series sponsored by Presbyterian Manor of Sterling and Sterling United Presbyterian Church.
The study series, entitled "From Age to Age the Same," begins Feb. 18. It will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on six consecutive Sundays at the United Presbyterian Church, 307 N. Broadway. It is free and open to the public. The series concludes March 25.
The Rev. Dan March helped plan the study series earlier this year while serving as the Manor's interim executive director.
"We have a Christian faith-based mission to serve the larger community," he said. "My goal was to strengthen our position as a community health care resource by providing local people with the best current information on aging. I think it's our responsibility to initiate that. The timing was appropriate. Lent is a time of reflection and study in the Christian tradition."
March said the study features a collaboration of some of the best local experts, who will share their insights and answer questions from participants. March said a give-and-take format was important to ensure that people get the best possible benefit from their participation.
The topics will present a holistic approach with a goal of helping people live safer, smarter and healthier lives as they traverse life's stages.
"The target audience is not just seniors but also Boomers who have parents who need assistance," said March. "We want it to be open to all people."
The series begins with an examination of "Aging in the 21st Century," which will include a look at trends in aging services such as senior housing and assistive technology. That session will be led by the Manor's new executive director, Mike Rajewsky.
Here is a list of the remaining sessions:
- Feb. 25: "Eat, Drink, Be Merry" will feature a discussion of the biology of aging - physical and spiritual - led by Roger Tobias, a geriatrician based in Lyons. Tobias also is an advisory committee member at Presbyterian Manor.
- March 4: "When I Was a Child" will explore the emotional and psychological challenges of aging in today's society, including a discussion of end-of-life issues - led by Arnold Froese, Ph.D., retired Sterling College professor.
- March 11: "Stages of Faith" will feature a panel discussion of the stages of faith development and how they impact our lives - led by the Rev. Seth Svaty, pastor of United Presbyterian Church of Sterling and a philosophy instructor at Sterling College.
- March 18: "Middlesence and the Aging Boomer" will examine psychological and emotional challenges facing baby boomers and their parents. It refers to a term coined by author Gail Sheehy that is a combination of "middle age" and "adolescence" - led by Janet Carrier, a licensed social worker with Prairie View-Hutchinson.
- March 25: "Resources for the Journey" will bring together various aging services providers for a resource fair.
