Soup supper more than good food

The Manor’s annual soup supper will include much more than good food.

Bowls of chicken soup or chili with relishes and homemade pie will beckon residents, family and friends on Friday, Oct. 20, and many will be glad to hear that the gooseberry pie that has been so popular will be available again this year.

Diners can enjoy their meals in the main dining room or the lower level. Carryout meals will be available in Executive Director Fran Paxton’s office. Food tickets are $6 if purchased in advance and $7 at the door. The Manor will once again operate a shuttle service from the East Crawford recreation area to accommodate people unable to find available parking in the Manor’s main parking lot.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be used to purchase a new wheelchair transportation van.

There will be baked goods as well as arts and crafts for sale in conjunction with the supper.

Finished craft items may be brought to Fran’s office. Dropping off the items early will allow the committee to price unmarked items in advance. Those who donate items are encouraged to list a suggested selling price. Baked goods can be dropped off in the lobby the morning of Oct. 20.

This year’s event also includes many new specialdonation drawings. Various employee departments have put together themed baskets. A donation of $1 for one ticket or $5 for six tickets will be suggested. Larger donations will include a floral wreath from Pettles Flowers, a wall hanging or table runner from volunteer Betty Rassette, two water color paintings created by artist Ann Eitel and donated by Bill and Jan Harris, and many more items that will be listed as they come in.

It is not too late to sign up to bake a pie or donate money to purchase pies.

In the past, our own residents have made sure we have plenty of pies by either baking a pie or donating money for purchasing a pie.

The Manor’s soup supper has a long and interesting history. In October 1987, the soup supper was started by the Volunteer Advisory Committee, a small group that supported the Manor’s volunteer program.

Members of the committee included Lucille Reitz, Elaine Chapman, Becky Morrison, Carol Romeiser and Nancy Linville.

In addition, the committee enlisted the help of volunteers Ann Knowles and Jacquie Jones. Community members Don and Beth Millikan, Gwen Johnson and Beth Miller also assisted with the event.

This group was a working committee and members pitched in from the beginning to the end.

The Manor thanks those people who have returned year after year to help make this project what it is today.
