Wellness center fundraising reaches goal

A Wellness Team began meeting in May with this mission: To enhance the well-being of the mind, body and spirit of residents and staff at Newton Presbyterian Manor.

Although we do not currently have a formal Wellness Room, our residents are involved in many wellness-related activities. The Wellness Team’s purpose is to enhance and encourage those activities and create new opportunities.

The task force’s first recommendation is to create a fitness area for all residents. The basement recreation room will now be converted to a Wellness Room to serve this purpose. The front half of the room will be used for exercise and wellness-related classes. The back half will house several pieces of fitness equipment. Other items such as a television, mirrors and charts will be added; the pool and ping pong table will remain in the back of the room. The cost of converting our recreation room to a Wellness Room will be funded through donations.

The second recommendation is to create a partnership with the Newton Recreation Commission (NRC). As a result, we will provide transportation for interested residents to Senior Swims and Arthricise classes held at the NRC several times a week. There is also the possibility that the NRC will offer classes in our Wellness Room for our residents and the Newton community.

The third and final recommendation is to create interest in our program with walking clubs. We currently have several residents who walk around the exterior of our campus or in the main building’s hallways. We are in the process of creating a “Manor on the Move” walking program that will encourage more residents to become interested. Progress will be tracked and prizes awarded at various stages.
