Max grew up a stone’s throw away
from the Manor at the corner of
Broadway and Sherman.
Myra graduated from Newton
High School and went to business
school in Dodge City. She worked
for more than 40 years as a legal
secretary for Speir, Stroberg and
Sizemore law firm (now the
Sizemore, Burns and Gillmore firm)
in Newton.
Marion graduated from Newton
High School and married Ray Nickel
a few years later. Ray was a produce
manager for Dillons in Newton.
Marion worked in the Santa Fe
telegraph office before becoming
a homemaker.
Marion, Myra and Max’s mother,
Inez Kinnear, was a Newton native who married Everett Utz from
Sedgwick.
Inez was a homemaker, and
Everett worked as a switchman for
the Santa Fe Railroad. They were both active in various Santa Fe
Railroad organizations. Inez and
Everett sold part of their land to the
Manor.
Later, Myra lived in the same
house and was able to see the
Manor’s growth firsthand.
In 2004, Presbyterian Manor
purchased Myra’s and her
sister-in-law’s houses and land for
future expansion.
“Presbyterian Manor was always a
good neighbor to us,” said Myra.
“This gift is a way to give back to
Newton and honor the memory of
our parents.”
