Home | Recent News | Newton | Tobacco-Free Campus 17 Jun 2007 Campus to become tobacco-freePresbyterian Manor is joining with Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton and Schowalter Villa in Hesston to become tobacco-free campuses effective September 1, 2007.
The reasons for this initiative include:
- Our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles
- The desire from consumers to have a smoke-free campus
- Irritation and known health effects of secondhand smoke
- The increased risk of fire from smoking.
The use of tobacco products anywhere on campus including in apartments, houses, buildings, Manor vehicles, parking lots and grounds by residents, visitors, contractors, and vendors will be prohibited.
According to Shawn Sullivan, Executive Director “I am pleased that we are able to join together with two other retirement communities and follow the example that Newton Medical Center and Prairie View made last year when they became tobacco-free campuses.”
This initiative fits well with Presbyterian Manor’s promotion of healthy lifestyles through our wellness program. The overwhelming majority of both residents and staff have been very positive about this initiative. In an effort to assist our staff who wish to stop using tobacco products, we have offered multiple benefits to them and many will be utilizing various programs and interventions.
“I ask that all constituents including family and friends of residents be respectful of and follow our new policy,” Sullivan added.
