PEAK is a cooperative program of the KDOA and Kansas State University. The goal is to change the culture of longterm care through recognition and education. The Manor is one of seven locations selected to receive an award this year. “This is a great recognition for the ability of our staff to provide care and services in an environment as much like home as possible,” said Executive Director Shawn Sullivan. “With everything we do, we try to ask ourselves what our residents want, how they did it at home, and how we would want it done. This includes everything from meals to activities to schedules.” For the competition, the Manor included recently implemented programs that enhanced resident choice, staff empowerment, community involvement and the physical environment. KSU will continue developing education modules, incorporating the innovative ideas of Presbyterian Manor and other winners. “We are very proud of the Presbyterian Manor in Newton,” said William Ward, president and CEO of Presbyterian Manors of Mid- America. “They accepted the challenge of the PEAK program, which emphasizes employing innovative alternatives for providing resident- focused care and services for our oldest Kansans. By creating a variety of avenues for change and being constantly mindful of residents’ needs and preferences, they provide an excellent atmosphere for senior living and also help to dispel negative stereotypes of senior living choices.”
