Home | Recent News | Newton | New Fitness Center 06 Aug 2006 New fitness center hours announcedThe new wellness center will soon be complete and open for exercise. We are in the process of organizing equipment, setting up fitness assessments, and planning classes, trips and other events for the wellness center. The new hours will be Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Additionally, on Tuesdays, the hours will be 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon hours will be reserved for trips to the Newton Recreation Center for Arthricise water classes. Fitness assessments will be required before beginning exercise on the equipment. These assessments are used for exercise prescription, evaluation of progress, motivation and education, as well as introduction to fitness equipment. Hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Arrangements can be made for additional hours if needed. An application needs to be on hand prior to using the Day Services so all pertinent information is available in case of an emergency. They will need to be scheduled by contacting Jennifer Sheeran, wellness director, during open office hours, which are Monday and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. The fitness assessments involve a health history questionnaire and a fitness evaluation to determine strength, flexibility and endurance. This information will then be used to develop an individual fitness prescription and introduction to all fitness equipment. In addition to fitness assessments, assistance is available on the fitness equipment, personal training and any questions on wellness subjects. When complete, the new wellness center will include two Nu-Step recumbent cross trainers, an arm cycle, a Schwinn Airdyne stationary bicycle, a Precor Elliptical Machine, a Precor Strength Training System, free weights ranging from one to 10 pounds, Therabands, one stability ball and one balance disc cushion. In addition to the fitness center, there are planned trips to the Newton Recreation Center for use of the pool. Please contact Jennifer at ext. 1051 if you are interested in attending Arthricise water classes on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. We have watercolor painting class in the Recreation Room by artist Jeannette Seger on Thursdays at 2 p.m. Art therapy student Janice Beckham has volunteered to teach photography, clay or other areas of interest to our residents. If you would be interested in learning photography or clay or if you have another interest in the arts you would enjoy learning, please contact Jennifer. If there is enough interest, we will make a monthly nutrition class or a cooking class where we try a new recipe or enjoy residents’ favorites. And finally, what is wellness without an occasional day trip? We are taking ideas for destinations of interest from independent residents and will either be able to assist in making arrangements or be available to drive. Some ideas that have been shared are a “grand ice cream tour of Wichita,” travel to local fruit stands and local farmers markets, and trips to Hutchinson and Wichita. Let us know were you would like to travel and we can see what can be arranged! As the wellness center continues to grow, please keep us informed of interests you would enjoy having at the Manor. Our hope is that the wellness center becomes what residents of the Manor would like it to be, and more.
