March is National Nutrition Month, a campaign sponsored by the American Dietetics Association. The campaign’s purpose is to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
The message of National Nutrition Month is to focus attention on the 2005 recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Keep in mind these key messages of National Nutrition Month as you prepare and select your next meal.
Remember that the food and physical activity choices you make each day can effect how you feel today as well as in the future.
Eat a balanced diet by eating a variety of foods every day. Make smart choices from each of the food groups while working to limit fats, cholesterol, added sugars and alcohol.
Get the most nutrition out of your calories by selecting foods packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber but lower in calories. Find a balance between food and physical activity. Regular exercise is great for your health, and the benefits include controlling weight, promoting well-being and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
Achieve physical fitness by including cardiovascular exercise such as walking, stretching exercises for flexibility, and resistance exercise for muscle strength and endurance.
Finally, keep you and your family safe by preparing, handling and storing food properly.
