Area residents are invited to “Discover Life After 55” expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the Newton Activity Center, 415 N. Poplar, Newton. There is no admission charge. In addition to door prizes, exhibits and information of interest to those 55-plus, seminars will be offered during the expo. Those confirmed at presstime include: - 10:15 a.m.: “SilverSneakers Fitness Program Class,” led by Newton Recreation Commission instructor Sherry Beckham. A chair is used for seated and/or standing support. Bring your sneakers and a water bottle.
- 11 a.m.: “Mind Aerobics” with Alzheimer’s Association program director Kathy Sikes.
- 11:30 a.m.: “Discover How to Avoid Financial Faux Pas After 55,” led by Mike Barron of EdwardJones, Newton.
- Noon: “New Treatments in Arthritis: Conservative and Surgical Advancements,” presented by Dr. James Rochelle of Axtell Orthopedics.
- 12:30 p.m.: “Discover How to Look Your Best After 55," featuring Chisholm Trail Lifestyle Center appearance consultants from The Salon, Bon Worth and Dress Barn.
- 1 p.m.: “Day Trips,” presented by Jeff Arensdorf of Village Tours, Wichita.
- 1:30 p.m.: “Discover How to Remain Fit After 55,” featuring Bob Lida of Wichita, the world’s fastest 71-year-old man.
Live entertainment will include: - 10 a.m.: Schniggle Fritz German Band.
- 10:40 a.m.: Mike Flavin’s folk guitar music.
- 11:20 a.m.: Dave Anderson will perform hammer dulcimer tunes.
- Noon: Bethany Amstutz and Eric Schrag will present folk and bluegrass music.
- 12:40 p.m.: Judy Mace will entertain with harp classics.
- 1:20 p.m.: Della Mae Harr of Newton will play piano favorites.
The Breadbasket will sell lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Sunflower Room. “After 55,” there’s time to spend doing more of what you want to do, and Newton offers the freedom to explore your interests and the resources to stimulate your mind.
