Claassen family has history of strong ties to Manor

Recent News

Cornelius Claassen was a member of the original board of directors founding Presbyterian Manor and was treasurer for many years.

He was also financial advisor to the Rev. Dr. George Nelson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Newton.

Dr. Nelson fostered the idea of caring for the elderly and brought it to reality under sponsorship of the church.

Cornelius became a member of the board of the United Presbyterian Foundation of Kansas when it was first organized in 1948. As president of Newton’s Kansas State Bank, he was immediately elected treasurer of the foundation and continued in that position until his retirement from the board in 1968, when he continued to serve on the Manor’s Advisory Committee. Following is an excerpt from George Nelson’s memoirs:

“There is nothing that [I] can say to adequately express [my] appreciation for Mr. Claassen. We have been closely associated over the years in all phases of the financial development of the Foundation and Newton Presbyterian Manor. The annuity system, which is a part of the Foundation finances, is directly the development of Mr. Claassen.”

Cornelius’ wife, Addie, also was a vital member of the Manor who volunteered faithfully in a variety of ways.
