Children from the Apple-A-Day Preschool located at Newton Presbyterian Manor perform at the 2009 Apple Blossom Festival.

Apple Blossom Festival brings quality family fun, entertainment and a great meal to the Newton community as the first outdoor celebration of spring. Set for Friday, April 30 at Newton Presbyterian Manor, the event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on the Manor lawn at 1200 E. Seventh.

“Apple Blossom Festival has always been a fun evening for all ages,” said Noelle Dickinson, marketing director. “We love that children can safely enjoy activities geared just for them while their parents and grandparents relax nearby, enjoying music and entertainment with a local flavor.”

Dinner is a whole hog barbecue with potato salad, baked beans, garlic bread and apple pie. Hot dogs, hamburgers & chips are also available. Proceeds of the dinner benefit Presbyterian Manor’s Good Samaritan Fund.

Live entertainment begins at 4:45 p.m. with the following acts:

4:45 Schniggle Fritz German Band
5:20: Apple-A-Day Preschool, the Manor’s on-campus preschool
5:40: Newton Community Children’s Choir
6:10: Azteca Dancers
6:30: Boeing Jazz Band
7:15: Singer/Songwriter Virginia Williams

KidFest, a Festival favorite, will include special activities and fun for children of all ages. Featured this year are the popular petting zoo, moonwalks, giant slide, fun cycles and banana bikes, as well as carnival games & prizes. As a fundraiser for the Good Samaritan Fund, children may play all evening with a $3 stamp.

Crafters and local commercial vendors will be selling gifts, jewelry and home décor, and promoting local businesses. Antique cars will be on display, and horse-drawn carriage rides are available for the whole family. A baked goods booth will sell homemade sweet treats to eat or take home for later.

Festival tickets are $7 in advance for adults and $8 on site. Children ages 3 to 10 years old are $3 in advance and $4 the evening of the Festival. Tickets are available at the Manor.

All proceeds of the Festival will benefit the Good Samaritan Fund, which provides financial assistance for Manor residents who have outlived their personal resources. Past Festivals have raised between $12,000 and $20,000 for this cause.

“We want to especially thank our Apple Blossom Festival sponsors,” said Kim Halbert, executive director. “Their support is what makes this wonderful community event possible.” Premier sponsors of Festival 2010 are First United Presbyterian Church, St. Luke Presbyterian Church, Sutherland Builders, and the Newton Kansan.
