‘Pie’s the limit’ for residents

February is Great American Pie Month and to celebrate, we will have a pie-baking contest.

The Pie’s the Limit is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 23. There will be a sign up sheet in the business office for those who wish to enter the contest. Pies should be brought to the business office no later than noon on the 23rd. Judging will begin at 1 p.m., and everyone is invited to the “tasting” party at 2:30 p.m. in the recreation room.

Pies have been around since the ancient Egyptians, but it was the Romans who spread the word about pies around Europe.

The word pyes originally appeared in England as early as the 12th century. The crusts were known as coffyns.

Early pies were predominantly meat. Fruit pies or tarts were probably first made in the 1500s.

English tradition credits the making of the first cherry pie to Queen Elizabeth I.

Pies came to America with the Pilgrims. They were introduced to fruits and berries by the Native Americans, and they used the fruits and berries for fillings.

Pies were cooked in long narrow pans called coffins like the crusts in England. It was during the American Revolution that the term crust was used instead of coffin. Over the years pies have evolved to became what they are today, traditional American desserts.

Sweet dessert pies are distinctly American.
