Home | Recent News | Lawrence | Schild Receives Phoenix Awards 18 Feb 2008 Schild receives Phoenix AwardsEach year, the Lawrence Arts Commission chooses eight people who have made outstanding contributions to the local arts community to receive the Phoenix Award. Artist and Presbyterian Manor resident, Joyce Schild, was one of the recipients for 2007. Joyce is credited with being one of the driving forces in creating an annual art festival and organizing the Art Guild in Lawrence and Douglas County. That art festival, now known as Art in the Park, is held annually on the first Sunday in May in South Park. It is still going strong 45 years later with over 130 artists participating. The Lawrence Art Guild, organized in 1962 as a not-for-profit organization, promotes art awareness in Lawrence and surrounding areas. When Joyce moved to the Manor, she organized the garage (with her husband’s blessing) as a gallery/studio so she could continue painting. Last summer Joyce held a gallery talk and shared information about her paintings.
