Two Manor residents will celebrate momentous birthdays in May. Margaret Elvig will celebrate her 100th birthday May 9, and Mary Shunk will be 100 May 30. Margaret Elvig was born in Leavenworth. The Sunday she was born was one of the first official Mother’s Day celebrations. She graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1928 and then attended Huff Secretarial School in Kansas City, Mo. She worked as a legal secretary three years before attending the University of Kansas. While at KU she met and married Joe Traylor. They had a son, Jon, before Joe’s World War II service and another son, Tom, upon his return from his military service. Joe died when he was 57. Margaret became a housemother at the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Some years later she married Fritz Elvig. Her combined families have been wonderful, she said. She loved traveling, playing golf and volunteering. Memorable events in her lifetime include becoming a mother, Joe coming home from the South Pacific and the end of World War II. Margaret’s family is hosting a reception in her honor May 9. | | | Mary Shunk |
Mary Shunk was born in a small town near South Bend, Ind. After graduating from high school, Mary attended business college. She had several jobs over the years but was secretary to the superintendent of schools for many years. Mary and her husband raised their three sons and one daughter on their farm. Between running the farm and attending their son’s basketball games they were always very busy. Mary believes that her greatest achievement in life was raising her four children and running the farm. Mary’s family is hosting a reception in her honor on May 30.
