The Volunteer of the Year Award is designed to honor individuals whose volunteer achievements have made a difference to the lives of the people working and living in member organizations. Each Thursday morning, the Ukulele Lady (aka Emily Russell), leads group singing on the skilled nursing unit of the Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, delighting residents with old-time favorites and original compositions. In the afternoon, she returns for a session with the assisted living residents. Each quarter, she and fellow musicians from the Americana Music Academy lead a Sunday afternoon sing-along. Emily learned to play the ukulele while attending high school in Hawaii and has used this instrument to bring joy to others. “Residents find themselves drawn to her and the music,” says Jennifer Johnsrud, activities director at Presbyterian Manor. “She has a talent for music and shares this gift with the residents.” KAHSA is a statewide association of more than 160 nonprofit long-term care organizations and retirement communities. Its mission is to provide services to members to assist them in enhancing the quality of life of the elders they serve. This year KAHSA is celebrating the sixteenth year of the Quality First Awards of Excellence for outstanding programs at member organizations.
