National nurses organization recognizes Presbyterian Manors’ expertise

American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators honors two PMMA employees

Wichita, Kan. – March 18, 2009 – Two employees of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, were recently honored by a national nursing organization for their expertise in quality care for residents in their retirement communities. Sheryl Nelson, RN, Kansas City, Kan., received the Outstanding Nurse Assessment Coordinator award, and Jane Hull, executive director, Fulton, Mo., received the Outstanding Administrator award from the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators. AANAC is a non-profit professional organization that supports clinicians who assess the health of residents in long-term care locations.

“It’s always gratifying when another organization honors our employees to recognize the superb care they provide,” said PMMA President and CEO Bill Ward Jr. “We’re prod of their dedication and their hard work.”

Sheryl Nelson joined Presbyterian Manor-Kansas City in 2000 as a case manager, which provided plenty of one-on-one time with residents. Her current position is behind the scenes. "Sheryl was determined to continue her close relationship with residents," explains Edith Smith-Rainey, quality assurance coordinator. “By being an MDS coordinator, she is able to contribute to making sure residents receive good quality care.” MDS -- the Minimum Data Set -- is part of the federally mandated process for clinical assessment of all residents in Medicare or Medicaid certified retirement communities. The process provides an appraisal of each resident’s functional capabilities and helps identify health problems. Another nominator wrote, “Her work has produced high quality results repeatedly in her ability to teach others the skills and knowledge she has obtained through the years. Sheryl demonstrates patience to all she teaches allotting time for mistakes and growth,” according to colleague Carol Palmer, RN.

Jane Hull is the executive director for Presbyterian Manor-Fulton in Missouri, and has been with PMMA 29 years. “Jane encourages the interdisciplinary team to work together for the good of our residents to ensure a complete picture of the resident’s physical, spiritual and medical needs are captured in order to provide the most excellent care possible for our residents,” said Becky Miller, the Farmington case manager nurse. “Jane has the ability to look through the tangled web of regulations, operational issues and professional standards of care to see that the resident is enabled to achieve the highest quality of life,” said Jeanne Gerstenkorn, PMMA informatics specialist.

“Congratulations to PMMA for having both winners of our awards this year,” said Susan Turman, AANAC vice president of operations. The criteria for the awards is “Individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty in their daily work, touching the lives of residents in special ways, making their load just a little bit lighter.” A committee of nurse assessment coordinators, corporate consultants, directors of nursing and administrators chose Nelson and Hull for the honor. They received their awards March 6 at the AANAC conference in Kansas City, Mo.
