Be alert for Kansas Medicare scam

Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is warning Kansans on Medicare to be aware of a new phone scam. The caller claims to be a Medicare representative from your area office. They report that all beneficiaries will receive $150 or $200 per month for prescription drugs on a new Medicare card. The caller asks you to confirm your Medicare number and ask for a bank account number.

Real Medicare representatives will never ask for bank account information over the phone. If you receive a suspicious call contact the Kansas Insurance Department at 1-800-432-2484 or the Senior Health Insurance Hotline at 1-800-860-5260. According to reports, the caller is said to have a foreign accent and has used the last name of Jones with the representative ID# DJ1049. The caller might give out phone numbers with an 866 area code as a number to call if they do not want to enroll now.
