WICHITA, Kan. — A competition among Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America employees and residents raised more than 9,400 items for food banks in Kansas and Missouri. PMMA’s 17 retirement communities, as well as the home office in Wichita, participated in the annual Food Round-Up contest. Employees were encouraged to donate canned goods, staples, and non-food items such as diapers and soap. Parsons Presbyterian Manor won this year’s contest by collecting 17.35 items per employee. PMMA made a $350 donation to the Labette County Assistance Program to honor the Parsons Manor’s achievement. Parsons also won last year’s competition. Sterling Presbyterian Manor was a close second this year with 17.29 items per employee, and Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kan., topped location totals with 2,650 items, including $2,000 in cash donations. In addition to the Food Round-Up, several PMMA locations are adopting families and giving in other ways to their surrounding communities. The Lawrence Presbyterian Manor employees and residents, for example, serve as bell-ringers for the Salvation Army, bake pies for the Community Christmas Dinner and knit “snuggles” for animals at the Humane Society shelter. Farmington Presbyterian Manor raised more than$450 for needy families in St. Francois County, Mo. This is the second year for the friendly food-raising competition among Presbyterian Manors employees. Most locations chose to actively involve residents this year, which helped increase this year’s grand total by more than 5 percent. All items will go to the locations’ local food banks. Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America is a not-for-profit, faith-based organization of 17 retirement communities in Kansas and Missouri. In its 60th year, PMMA has long been recognized for its reputation for providing quality senior communities.
