WICHITA, Kan. – Dec. 07, 2009 – 2010 Art Is Ageless® calendars featuring the artworks of Kansans and Missourians are now available. The artists featured in the calendar range in age from 65 to 83 years old.

The 2009 Art is Ageless® winners were chosen from local juried exhibits held at Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s 17 locations in Kansas and Missouri. Winners were chosen in eight categories – Christmas, drawing, fiber arts, mixed media, needlework, painting, photography, and sculpture/3-dimensional. The top contenders at each local exhibit were then chosen anonymously by judges from arts councils and associations in Kansas City, Salina and Wichita.

In addition to the 29th annual calendar, other winners were selected for Christmas, birthday and note cards; those artists were up to 92 years old. The Art is Ageless® program encourages creative expression and fosters artistic talent and interest in seniors throughout the Presbyterian Manors system.

Ella Leslie - winner of the Spirit of Art is Ageless

“At Presbyterian Manors we believe there is no age limit for creativity, no deadline for great achievement and no real restrictions on what can be done as you age,” said Bill Ward, president and CEO of Presbyterian Manors. “The artists who participate in Art Is Ageless® are great examples of what our residents and community members can accomplish by living life on their terms.”

This year’s calendar art includes a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. by Salina, Kan., sculptor Richard Bergen, who crafted the “Ad Astra” statue atop the Kansas Capitol dome in Topeka. The King piece will be placed on the Kansas State University campus. Other calendar art includes pottery by Bobbi Kemna of Fort Scott, Kan., a paper pulp mixed media piece by Jerry Exline of Salina, Kan., quilts, watercolors, a pencil drawing and oil paintings.

While Art is Ageless® winners can live in PMMA locations or their surrounding communities, one resident from the Presbyterian Manors system is chosen annually to receive the Spirit of Art is Ageless award. This year’s Spirit of Art is Ageless award winner is Ella Leslie from Wichita Presbyterian Manor. The award honors the participant who best exemplifies how artistic and creative expression can enhance one’s life. Aside from art assignments in junior high, Ella Leslie hadn’t painted until her family gave her watercolor supplies as a retirement gift. She has since studied with three art instructors. “Like all artists, I hope to see improvement in my work, but more important is the therapeutic joy I get at my paint station.”
Order forms for calendars and cards are available now at presbyterianmanors.org.
