Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America employees will focus on the organization’s mission when they simultaneously celebrate Founder’s Day on April 19. The 1,900 professionals in 17 communities will sign promise boards signifying a re-dedication of their support for PMMA’s core values of respect, dignity and independence. This is PMMA’s first systemwide observance of Founder’s Day since the company began in 1949.

Surveys through the years indicate PMMA employees feel that being a part of their residents’ lives enriches their own. They take seriously the opportunity they have to make a positive difference in the lives of seniors and their families. The Founder’s Day celebration thanks employees for that devotion and for providing high-quality services.

The company’s roots go back to 1947, when Alice Kalb, a widow from central Kansas, appealed to a Presbyterian Church organization to provide a residential community for Midwestern seniors. Her vision for the first Presbyterian Manor community in Newton, Kan., inspired others to do even more. While the company is no longer a part of the Presbyterian Church, its faith-based mission and not-for-profit status are evident in the positive outcomes of its residents. The organization has 17 communities in Kansas and Missouri.

In addition to the camaraderie of Founder’s Day, employees are reviewing how the mission, core values, brand promise and strategic message are fulfilled every day through their service to seniors. Residents will join in the celebrations, as well.

“For so many of our employees, what they do is not a job, it is a calling,” said William Ward Jr., president and CEO. “It is an honor to be a part of an organization whose primary purpose is to serve seniors and their families. Our dedicated employees make it possible for us to sustain PMMA’s mission, which directly impacts the wonderful care our 2,200 residents receive every day.”

In Medicare’s most recent release of Five-Star quality rated retirement communities, 11 of 16 eligible PMMA locations achieved the Five-Star rating -- the highest score possible -- and another four received four stars. The organization’s 18th community, Aberdeen Heights, will open later this year in Kirkwood, Mo., in the St. Louis area.
