Exploring Creativity During International Creativity Month

’Tis the season for making resolutions and trying new things. With a new year ahead, the residents of Presbyterian Manor at Fulton invite the community to join them in celebrating International Creativity Month by participating in a series of special events in January.

“International Creativity Month gives us the opportunity to examine the ways we usually think, hear, see, remember and age, and learn to challenge ourselves in whole new ways,” explained Jeff Young, director of Manor activities. “We can learn from the challenges of others and develop our own tools that can help us break out of the same old patterns.”

The community is invited to join residents at a series of special guest presentations that will highlight different sub-themes each week. Each of these presentations is free and open to the public. All will be held at the Manor, 811 Center Street. Here are the weekly themes and presentations.

Jan. 1-7: “New Ways to Think” will feature a presentation by Fulton mural artist Jane Mudd, who is an associate professor of art at William Woods University. Mudd, who painted the mural at 721 Bluff Street in Fulton, will discuss how she had to think differently to overcome obstacles, problems and scheduling to accommodate such a large-scale art project. She will speak at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 3 in the assisted living dining room at the Manor.

Jan. 8-14: “New Ways to Hear” will feature a musical presentation at 2 p.m. Jan. 11 by Susan Groves, a music therapist who will share the sounds of several musical instruments.

Jan. 15-21: “New Ways to See” will feature an introduction to oil painting by members of the Fulton Community Art Club at 7 p.m. Jan. 17.

Jan. 22-28: “New Ways to Remember” will feature an introductory class about scrapbooking on Jan. 27, led by local scrapbooker Pam Heimricks (time TBA).

Jan. 29-31: “New Ways to Age” will feature sessions on meditation and Tai Chi, a type of exercise that features slow, deliberate movements (times TBA). Additionally, Wednesday, Jan. 31, will be “Inspire Your Heart with Art Day,” featuring art-related activities as well as an emphasis on heart health as residents look ahead to February, which is Heart Awareness Month.

Megan Means, the Manor’s marketing director, said the special events stemmed from a desire to mark the New Year with something special.

“By hosting creative activities each week and involving various groups within the community, we hope that this month will bring about some glorious pieces of art or maybe even reveal hidden talents that residents or others in the community never knew existed. It’s going to be a lot of fun!” she said.

For more information on any of these events, please contact the Manor at 642-6646.
