Home | Recent News | Fort Scott | Re-Create The Box Supper Event of Yesteryear 03 Sep 2010 Fort Scott Presbyterian Village invites the public to re-create the box supper event of yesteryearOne of the main community social events of bygone days was the box supper. The women and girls prepared meals and put them in ornately decorated boxes. This event took weeks to plan and several trips into town for decorations and food. All cooking was, of course, from scratch and well-thought out. On the evening of the event, an auctioneer would hold up a box, and the men would bid on it. The married men would run the bids up on the single men just for fun! The money went to a good cause in the community. Games, a cake walk and live banjo music added elements to the fun. The best part of the evening came when the winning bidder got to share the meal or a piece of pie with the woman who made it. New friendships were made during each event. While box suppers faded away by the 1970s, Fort Scott Presbyterian Village is reviving the tradition for the community on Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. The ladies at the Village are busy decorating their boxes with care. The Village will prepare a fun outdoor-style meal with homemade pies and cakes. The dinners will be carefully placed in each ornately decorated box that was designed specifically for auction. The highest bidder from the community will join his senior gal over supper, and they’ll share dessert from the box as they learn more about each other. If anyone is interested in making homemade pies and cakes for the event, please contact Rita Peck or Ginger Dierksen at Presbyterian Village in advance at 620-223-5550 or rpeck@pmma.org. Come on out to join in on the bidding! All money raised will go toward future fun activities, much like this, designed for an active senior lifestyle .
