Virginia Hart was born Virginia Pryor on November 10, 1921, the first daughter of parents Roy and Lyda Pryor of Bourbon County. Six years later her sister was born. She stated that she has never lived anywhere else but Bourbon County, but bloomed where she was at Growing up she attended Victory Grade School east of town. Then went to Fort Scott High School and graduated in 1939. While attending the First Church of God, of which she is still a member, she met C.W. Clifford William Hart. C.W. nickname was Cotton because of his blonde hair, but that was alright with Virginia because she liked big blonde headed boys. They soon married on May 25,1940.They started a family in Fort Scott just northeast of town in a small three bedroom house with two shed porches. Mrs. Hart said that every time she got pregnant Cotton would add on another room. She also stated that while raising a family she learned a few things and one of those was that children remember the little things that you say to them, they just stick with them. Having three sons (John, Gerald, and James) Mrs. Hart was a domestic engineer homemaker, but during the World War II she worked outside the home at a printing company called Standard Ad. Mr. Hart was a conductor for the Frisco Railroad. When he was home they would spend their companionship time together in his woodworking shop. He had everything under the sun in that shop, and loved every minute of it,said Mrs. Hart. She added that while he was woodworking (making grandfather clocks for the boys, or work for the church) she would read or crack walnuts. Family vacations for the Harts included taking the camper all over the country. They especially liked to go to Grand Lake in Arkansas to see her grandmother and other family. They were happily married a total of 59 years when Mr. Hart passed away in 1999.
Some of Mrs. Hart hobbies are doing puzzles, and as she puts it “the home crafts such as crocheting, knitting and sewing, which she still loves to do. Even though she never had any girls, she used to make shirts, pajamas and suit coats for the boys. When asked about her favorite things she replied I pretty much like everything, but especially the color red and homemade turkey dressing.
Due to declining health her family moved her to Presbyterian Village in July of 2006. She states that she is very thankful and grateful for all that her family has done for her. In closing she added It just seems like the dear Lord makes things easy for me. I enjoy my apartment and the many friends that I have at the Village. Some day I would like to knit again, but the activities at the Village keep me plenty busy.
