Couple celebrates golden anniversary

Recent News

Vernon and Nell Neese have shared 50 wonderful years together.

Vernon and Nell Neese have shared many great accomplishments together. In 2003, for example, the couple represented the Village in the Little Balkans Days Contest in Pittsburg, Kan., and won the king and queen title. This year, though, they will be celebrating one of the biggest events in their lives — their 50th wedding anniversary.

Nell and Vernon met in Topeka, Kan., through a mutual friend. They were married on June 6, 1955. Their lives have taken them from a home in Topeka to McAllen, Texas, to Fort Scott, and they have enjoyed every experience along the way.

The couple lived in Topeka for 19 years. Nell worked in the employment security division for the State of Kansas while Vernon was involved with construction and worked on the I-70 highway from Topeka to Kansas City. The couple moved to McAllen, Texas, in 1974 where Vernon continued to work in construction. Then in 1980, they returned to Kansas. Vernon worked as a employee of the Cullor Limestone Company in Fort Scott and as a security guard at Mercy Hospital in Independence. After retiring in 1988, Nell and Vernon moved to their brand-new home in Fort Scott at 523 S. Crawford, where Nell loved working in her flower beds. In 1992, Vernon and Nell moved into the Village.

Nell loves to attend Village activities and continues to crochet and quilt. Vernon is always the gentleman to show up in a cowboy hat or costume, depending on the activity or holiday. We wish Vernon and Nell many more enjoyable years at the Village.
