Earlier this year, Presbyterian Village in Fort Scott started something new -- Community Friends. Residents get together to work on a project that will benefit an organization in the community. They enjoy the comraderie and the opportunity to have fun with a purpose. Our residents want to be involved in the Fort Scott community and this new opportunity seems to be filling that need quite nicely.

In February, the group chose to deliver lap robes to people who are in nursing centers and care homes. An extra treat for Village resident Velora Wallenberg was being able to surprise Clara Lyons, who is a former Village resident, with one of the lap robes.

"It really made me feel good to see the smile on Clara's face when I visited," said Wallenburg.

Community Friends made cookies for the American Red Cross Blood Drive in April. Marge Bailey (in the apron) and Helen Trotter work on a batch of cookies.

March brought Doctor's Day, so the group chose to help the Village make an impression and put together gift bags tied with balloons to deliver to area physicians in recognition of their day and to say thank you for their service to the community. In addition, the group made comfort kits for the Red Cross to give to families who have experienced a catastrophic loss such as a house fire. April brought an opportunity to make cookies for the Red Cross blood drive. Not only did everyone enjoy tasting the cookies as they came out of the oven, it was a great help to the Red Cross to provide to those who came to give blood.

"This is such a good opportunity to be involved with projects that benefit our town," said Helen Trotter, one of the Community Friends regulars. "I like being able to visit with my neighbors while doing something that will help someone else."

"I look forward to our next project each month," said John Holmes. "I also like that the Village asks us about what organization we would like to benefit from the project."

In May, the group will get together to make rag dolls from muslin fabric. These will be taken to the local hospitals for the emergency rooms to use to give to children who come in. June is still under discussion, as the residents choose the organization and project.
