First Annual Chili Cook-off A Success

Recent News

Judges compare notes during Presbyterian Village's first ever January chili cook-off.

On Thursday, January 18, residents and friends of Presbyterian Village in Fort Scott enjoyed sampling a variety of different chili’s that were brought in for our chili cook-off.

Seven community members brought in their “claim to fame” chili hoping to take home first prize. They were all delicious and judging was difficult.

Appearance and flavor were the key items taken into consideration for deciding the best chili. Judges included six Presbyterian Village residents, all of who are members of our Village menu committee: Marland Highbaugh, Anna Rourk, Mary Hewett, Jackie Hardy, Lois McKinnis and Donna Ingold. In addition, four Fort Scott community members were also asked to judge who included, Noel Connet, Michael Glover, Richard Neinstedt and JoAnn Thomas. This allowed for a variety of different ages to all sample.

The first place winner received $100, second place winner received $50 and third prize received $25. Each chili was unique ranging from a simple, basic recipe, to chili with a Caribbean flair. Interestingly enough, the basic recipe won first prize, entered by Josie Marlow, C.M.A. employed at the Presbyterian Village. Second prize goes to John Alley, employed at Mercy Health system and third prize goes out to the Caribbean flavor entered by L.P.N. at the Village, Lisa DeSilva Moore. Residents enjoyed the event so much that it was unanimous to plan a cookoff for next January.

A few of our residents at the Village have indicated that they plan to enter their chili next year. Some of the Fort Scott community members are still talking about it so we plan to grow this event as it was perfect for chasing away the winter chill.
