Home | Recent News | Fort Scott | Chamber Members 02 Apr 2006 Chamber members, city manager visit VillageAs always the Village is a busy place. Chamber Coffee April started out with the Village hosting the monthly Chamber of Commerce Coffee. This was a great opportunity for Executive Director Ginger Dierksen to inform chamber members about the upcoming Good Samaritan fundraising event. Everyone enjoyed visiting and taking short tours of the Village. City Manager update City Manager Richard Nienstedt visited the Village April 5 to update residents on the workings of the city. Among the many topics was the progress of Highway 69 between Fort Scott and Kansas City. It has been a long time coming, but the citizens of southeast Kansas will soon have a completed four-lane highway all the way to Kansas City. His Honor let everyone know about the soon-to-becompleted upgrades to Horton Street in front of the Village, the new water treatment plant and wastewater treatment facility. Some of the other issues he covered were the sale of the old middle school, listing city property for sale on the Internet and the possibility of a new aquatic center. It is always very informative when he visits. Learning from the Prof Darwin Anderson from Pittsburg State University was the featured speaker for the Villages’ quarterly “Lunch & Learn” April 11. The lunch and learn is open to the public as well as Village residents. Dr. Anderson discussed “Ways to Keep the Mind Sharp.” This is a great way to spend your lunch hour: Enjoying good food and receiving valuable information all at the same time. Shopping trips popular Many residents enjoy shopping trips. It is a way to get out and pick up necessary things, and a good change of pace. Along with regular trips to Dollar General and Wal-Mart there was recently a trip to Woods Supermarket. Residents also enjoy little side trips to see the town and an occasional drive through the park. Eating in Residents enjoyed an evening of pizza, good company and Red Skelton. The monthly trip to eat out was changed just a bit in April. Tenants chose to order take-out pizza and join each other in the community room and have a pizza party and movie night. Laughter was in the air as Red Skelton entertained. Thanks to Tim Byrd of the maintenance department for letting us borrow his “TV Classics of Red Skelton, America’s Favorite Funnyman” DVD. Our thanks to volunteers Sue and Sam Morrell for helping with this event. Spring Tea Springtime at the Village was celebrated with a Spring Tea. Residents and guests were treated to special teas, delicate deserts, door prizes and wonderful music. The dining room was decorated with beautiful flowers and an extensive tea pot collection. Jane Williams, Fort Scott High School orchestra director, and her string group entertained with several selections. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon visiting and listening to the outstanding music. Good Sam fund-raiser The Good Samaritan fundraiser event took place April 25. Again this year there was a Chicken Mary’s chicken dinner for all to enjoy along with wonderful entertainment provided by The Sekanaires. The live auction featured guest auctioneer Jim Stewart.
