May was Older Americans Month, and the Village had several activities to celebrate the residents and their contributions. On May 4, we enjoyed eating banana splits. Residents and staff enjoyed the afternoon in the ice cream parlor where they treated themselves to banana splits, coffee and good company. | | | Executive Director Ginger Dierksen, left, helps Emma Schilling do the limbo. |
There was such a great response to this gathering that the ice cream parlor was overflowing. Next time, we will have to meet in the community room. Residents and youth from the United Methodist Church and the First Presbyterian Church brought to an end this year’s intergenerational program with a luau. Everyone had a great time. The children enjoyed sack races, kite flying, a bean bag toss and doing the limbo. Residents enjoyed listening to beautiful Hawaiian music, snacking on fresh fruit and, of course, watching the children have fun. All received flower leis and treat bags to take home with them. Everyone would like to thank Connie Smith, director of the after-school program at the United Methodist Church, and Treva William, youth director at the First Presbyterian Church for organizing the youth and transporting them to the Village each month. Residents and staff also enjoyed a special noon meal. On the May 16, hamburgers and hot dogs were on the menu. A cookout was held on the patio and dining room to continue the celebration of Older Americans Month. Also on the menu was homemade potato salad, baked beans and strawberry short cake. Everyone would like to thank Mike Cheney for volunteering his time to cook the hamburgers and hot dogs for us. Each resident received a Village canvas tote bag that was made especially for this event. The month was concluded with a special memorial service for Memorial Day to celebrate the lives of residents who passed away during the last year. Family and friends gathered to remember these very special people. A short tribute was read about each person and a candle was lit in their honor. The Rev. Steve MacArthur led a short service. Everyone would like to thank Laura Wright for the beautiful music, Rev. MacArthur, for the responsive reading, and Donna Ingold for lighting candles. A special thank you to Alma Benedict for all her help to coordinate the service, writing and reading the tributes.
