 | | Residents enjoy making jewelry. Activities Director Dee Dee Cheney led a class on jewelry making. Residents had the opportunity to work with several types of beads to create one-of-a-kind necklaces. They also got to look at some examples of hand-made jewelry. Everyone agreed it was fun to try something new. | |
It is once again time for The Art is Ageless Exhibit. Artists age 65 and older, from throughout the Manor service area, have been invited to participate in the exhibit and competition. The Village’s exhibit opened July 20 and will be up until Aug. 3. The Village had 23 entries in the juried competition and 10 in the open exhibit. Judges this year were: Elaine Buerge, local artist; Mike Morris, owner of The Wall Street Gallery in Fort Scott; and Al Letner, artist and owner of Chicopee Pottery in Pittsburg. There were seven categories in which the artists could enter: drawing, painting, photography, sculpture/3-D, needlework, fiber arts and mixed media. Works must have been completed with in the past five years. Following the judging on the July 26, there was a reception held for the judges and artists in the Village lobby. This was a great time the artists to meet the judges and for the public to enjoy the exhibit. The judges awarded first, second and third place in each category. The following are the results of the competition: Needle works: - First, Caroline Lowery with an embroider pillow
- Second, Anna Rourk with appliquéd butterfly quilt
- Third, Mary Hewett with a child’s hat and dress.
Fiber arts: - First, Rachel Greenfield with a “stained glass” afghan
- Second, Vivian Jessee with plum work afghan
- Third, Oma Mitchell with crocheted doily.
Three-dimensional: - First, Emma Schilling with crocheted angel
- Second, Alma Benedict with Japanese ornaments.
Winners’ exhibits will be photographed for slides and sent to the home office for judging to select works for the 2007 calendar and cards. Thank you to everyone who made the exhibit a success.
