Art is Ageless Art Classes and Call for Entries

To begin our celebration of Presbyterian Village’s 2007 Art is Ageless events we are beginning with a drawing and water color class taught by Jeff Locke, Art Director at Fort Scott Community College. This year it is hoped that many community members will attend the class and make painting a new hobby of theirs. During the month of July we will have the artist’s reception.

Art is a form of communication that can bridge many gaps, gender, ethnic background, religion, even age. Engagement in art can also cover a wide range of abilities, even if a person lacks a great talent for producing art, they can still enjoy what others produce. Art is a great way to build a sense of community regardless of age.

Locke will also teach a beginner’s Drawing Class on June 4th at 1 p.m. and a Water Color class on June 8 at 1 p.m., both classes will be held in the Village Community Room. One of the objectives of the classes taught, according to Locke, is that it will give the person taking the class some basic knowledge in which to build upon in each different discipline. The two classes that are offered will be open to anyone who would like to sign up from the Village or from the community, at large.

In July we will be seeking your art to showcase at the Presbyterian Village 27th Annual Art is Ageless Juried Exhibit. We are seeking artwork from many different mediums including drawing, painting, photography, needlework, fiber arts, sculpture/3-D, and mixed media /crafts. If you are age 65 or older and have artworks you’ve created in the past five years, your work can be judged in the exhibit. Artists may also choose to exhibit only, which allows works that may have been created more than five years ago or works you do not want to have shipped on exhibit to showcase your talent.

We ask that you bring in your artwork for the Art is Ageless display to the Activity Director’s office at the Village by July 13. (You do not have to be a Presbyterian Village resident to enter.) The art exhibit will be held July 16 through July 31 and will be open to the public. Judging will be held on August 1. Judges will award first, second and third place in each category of art. Those artworks who win at our local level will compete in Wichita for the opportunity to appear in the annual Presbyterian Manor Art Is Ageless calendar. In addition to the calendar, cards will be printed of some of the winning works, as well.

An artist’s reception, to honor all artists, will be held on July 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Presbyterian Village and this is open to the public. We invite everyone to be involved in this fun, creative event.
