Residents volunteer at local school

Hattie Bullis shares a special moment with a student.

According to a recent academic survey looking at overall happiness, feeling good and having fun can extend your life 7.5 to 10 years, reduce stress and can limit illnesses and the impact of health problems.

Five residents have generously volunteered their time at Washington Franklin Elementary School in hopes they make a difference in some little ones’ lives and add some fun and good feelings to their own.

Maria Thomason, Betty Luig, Caroline Chastain, Hattie Bullis and Marcella Mosey traveled to the school in October. They participated in the first day of a weekly “Senior Helper” mentoring program that will run every Thursday morning through the fall semester.

Betty Luig and Caroline Chastain served as grandparents to a little guy named Zach whose grandparents could not attend the fourth grade Grandparents’ Day celebration. They enjoyed visiting with the student and encouraged him to read his grandparent story in front of a 50 plus crowd of students and guests. Way to go Zach and our grandmas! Betty will be sharing her memoirs book soon with Mrs. Gunn’s class.

Several teachers indicated they don’t get to spend the much-needed one-on-one reading time with each student. That is where our Senior Helpers come to the rescue. Hattie Bullis spent her time in two different first grade classrooms listening to students read.

Maria Thomason assisted in Ms. Strange’s second grade class. When it was time to catch the van and return to the Manor, the students said good bye and voiced their appreciation. What a wonderful sound to hear 25 little voices in unison “Thank you Mrs. Thomason!”

Marcella Mosey enjoys the PAGES visits to Presbyterian Manor. So when she was approached about volunteering at Washington Franklin School she did not hesitate to say yes. Marcella was reconnected with the PAGES gifted class and was well received by the students and their teacher Kate Todd. When leaving the school, Marcella was asked about her time today in the classroom and said, “It is a pleasure to work with the kids - I have had the best morning.”

The Manor’s employees, volunteers, residents and surrounding community work to reduce stress and increase fun in the daily lives of residents so they can focus on having the best life they can.
