Mineral Area College has been the home of the Farmington area’s Senior Olympics for more than 20 years. This year on April 24th we all gathered yet again for the festivities. Teams representing 15 retirement communities and adult care homes in our area attended. The day was filled with all kinds of events for the residents to participate in: walking races, wheelchair races, and basketball.
Presbyterian Manor residents won several medals for these events. The residents also participated in what was said to be one of the largest Hot Potato games in Mid-America. This game consisted of well over 200 participants. Our very own Charlie Thompson won second place in this event. There was also a talent show during the meal time. Bill James played his harmonica beautifully as well as demonstrated his proficiency with bird calls. Martha Nichols also sang a beautiful rendition of “Silent Night” in German. Lunch for the day was provided by Little Caesars.
The Presbyterian Manor booth was decorated with several blue and purple balloons and drew admiring looks from the Olympics attendees. It was another great year for us at the Senior Olympics. The residents had been practicing throughout the month of April preparing for their events. Their hard work and dedication paid off clearly with smiles on their faces and medals hanging around their necks. We are looking forwards to next year.
