Margaret Norton, center, honored for 20 years of service as a Long-Term Care Ombudsman volunteer, is congratulated by Presbyterian Manor-Farmington Executive Director Jane Hull, left, and Regional Ombudsman Program Director Jan McFerron, right.

Farmington, Mo. - Residents, employees and guests recently gathered in the dining room of Presbyterian Manor-Farmington to honor Long-Term Care Ombudsman Volunteer Margaret Norton. In April, Norton was recognized at the state Long-Term Care Ombudsman Conference in Lake of the Ozarks for her 20 years of service. She was one of only three volunteers who had reached this 20-year service milestone in Missouri.

Jan McFerron, ombudsman program director for Region 2, welcomed everyone to the reception and shared her kind words of gratitude, “Margaret is an excellent volunteer, she is very dedicated, compassionate and her reports are always timely. She is a great advocate for the residents of Farmington Presbyterian Manor.” McFerron added, “Margaret has visited Presbyterian Manor every week for the past 20 years; that’s a minimum of 6,000 plus volunteer hours for the ombudsman volunteer program. Now that is dedication!”

McFerron then presented Norton a declaration from Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder. Norton graciously accepted her declaration and stated, “It has been a pleasure working at the Manor and working with the staff. They are so receptive. I always know problems will be taken care of in a prompt manner.”

Jane Hull, executive director of Presbyterian Manor-Farmington, thanked Norton for her years of service. “In today’s world this act of dedication is a significant accomplishment. We celebrate Margaret Norton for her compassion and service to our community,” Hull said.

Missouri’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is under the direction of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. An ombudsman is an outside person who serves as an advocate for seniors in long-term care communities. The local area agency on aging in Cape Girardeau provides funding for legal advice and consultation to individuals 60 years of age and over.
