Farmington High School CNA practicum held at Presbyterian Manor

Farmington High School students are fulfilling the practicum portion of their certified nurse assistant training at Farmington Presbyterian Manor.

Farmington, Mo. -- Fifteen juniors and seniors from Farmington High School started their Certified Nursing Assistant practicum Jan. 4 at the Presbyterian Manor of Farmington. Melissa Doyle, assistant director of nursing, toured the health care area with team teacher Lisa Denman and her eager students. Doyle and Denman will serve as co-teachers during the second semester of the CNA program.

During the first semester the students learned the proper techniques for bed transfers, taking vital signs and managing patient hygiene. Now they get the opportunity to take that knowledge and shadow the CNAs and nurses at Presbyterian Manor.

This partnership between Farmington High School and Presbyterian Manor began in the fall of 2008 when Denman approached Manor Executive Director Jane Hull and Leta Starkey, the Manor’s nursing director. Both were quick to agree to the practicum opportunity. “This is a win-win for our community,” Hull said. “We are so fortunate the high school chose the Manor for their practicum portion of the CNA program. These talented students will start their hopefully long and successful health service careers right here in our residents’ home.”

According to Lisa Denman there is a long history between Farmington High School students and Presbyterian Manor. In the 1990s, health service clubKnights in Service sent students to the retirement community for socialization, activities and job shadowing opportunities.

Because of the growing need in the local job market, Farmington High School has recently expanded its career and technical programs. Three classes have been added for the 2009-10 school year: a first responder program, the CNA program and a criminal justice program.

When asked why they chose the CNA program, a few students responded that they are considering a nursing career, another is pursuing the oncology field, and yet another aspires to be a doctor. Grace Fox, a senior at Farmington High School explained, “I hope to become a nurse someday.”

These young and energetic students will make a great addition to the Manor staff over the next few months. Hopefully after graduation, the residents and staff will see these new friends again, but next time as a CNA, LPN, RN, doctor or therapist.
