For Paul Shepherd, Villas are a “nice place to live”

Among the hottest amenities in today’s senior housing market are spacious apartments, according to Mature Living Spaces, which surveys more than 100,000 active adults annually.

A study by the National Association of Home Builders and Countrywide Home Loans affirms that the quest for a maintenance-free lifestyle also is a prime motivation among seniors relocating to new housing.

As a Villa resident at Presbyterian Manor, Paul Shepherd enjoys both: a spacious, two-bedroom townhome and none of the headaches of property maintenance, which is taken care of by the Manor. The Manor is located on 20 acres that includes several of the spacious villas.

Shepherd got an opportunity to “up size” two years ago from a smaller living space and jumped at it.

“I decided to take it. It looked very spacious,” he said of the townhome. “It’s a nice place to live. I think the others that live here seem to be pretty satisfied.”

He said he enjoys the patio home’s two bedrooms, two baths, spacious kitchen and large living room, and also its attached one-car garage.

“That was very important to me,” he said of the garage.

The garage gives him worry-free parking when he’s not traveling. He enjoys an annual fall trip to the Ozarks to see the foliage turn and returns in the spring to catch the Dogwood in bloom.

Shepherd has enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. He is known for his handcrafted name placards with each letter carved from wood.

“I used to make little pianos, and salt and pepper shakers/holders. I usually made names on them, too,” he said.

He retired as the postmaster at Hartford in 1976 and recalled having something during his 25-year tenure there that most small post offices in those days didn’t have: a canceling machine.

He has lived his entire life, with the exception of a brief stint in the army, in the area and is happy that in retirement, he has found a home here.

“It’s a nice place to live when you are retired,” he said of the Manor.

In addition to the Villas, Presbyterian Manor offers what today’s seniors are looking for: an active living and wellness community that includes a choice of resident options from its villa townhomes through health care, including a memory support program for those with Alzheimer’s or related illnesses.
