Books sent to soldiers in Iraq

Thanks to the efforts of volunteer Doris Slocombe, the Manor sponsored shipments of books to soldiers in Iraq. The first shipment was sent around Thanksgiving, and another box will be mailed near Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

“I want to thank the Manor for helping to fill some of the lonely hours for our soldiers overseas,” Doris said.

The November shipment contained approximately 40 books. It was sent to Doris’ nephew, PFC Andrew Craver, who is currently stationed in Iraq.

“He has been in touch with his mother and said that things are quite different from home,” Doris said. “There is dust everywhere and they wear goggles at all times to keep their eyes from drying out.”

Doris is a longtime volunteer. She frequently plays the piano for residents, assists with bingo and shares her computer knowledge with residents.
