Ruth Brown’s grandson, Manuel “Manny”, was the highlight of her day recently. She was wearing an apron of many colors in honor of his birthday; plus a necklace which was made from colorful fabrics in the shape of little people. Just by looking at her you could see how very proud she is of her close friendship with him. She wore these unique items because Manny was born in Guatemala and was adopted by her daughter, Sarah. He was 5 months old when adopted and his mother has tried to keep him aware of his culture by attending Central American Heritage day and numerous other cultural events. He is described by his grandmother as a bright, happy, athletic boy and is now in the 4th grade. | | | Grandma Brown shows off the colorful necklace that came from Guatemala. |
Two other grandchildren of this bubbly 91 year old grandmother are from Korea. Hannah and Nathan also have a close connection with their grandmother. Brown’s son, Rundell, adopted both children when they were small and are both 24 years old and currently in college. Hannah is now studying for her masters in Student Affairs in Higher Education and Nathan is majoring in Financial Planning. Brown remarked with a smile, “My grandchildren are the joy of my life. “I came to Presbyterian Manor of the Plains to live and love as hard as I know how. I’m enjoying myself and recently wrote down the things I like about living at the Manor.” She went on to say that she enjoys the beauty shop because it is so handy, the sunshine in her apartment, so she can see what the world looks like outside; likes the food, and the staff are especially nice. “I love it because I can buy stamps here, and have transportation when I need it and if I should have a problem or accident someone will help me immediately.”
