Resident Everett Fitzwater walks five days a week.

“I feel better when I’m walking. It’s invigorating, and I prefer to be outside. I enjoy the sunshine, and it’s just a good time to think things through and collect my thoughts,” Everett said.

Everett retired in 1983 and thence began his walking career. He started at five miles a day but has recently cut down to four miles per day. “The only time I don’t walk is in the rain or snow,” he said. “Actually, I prefer to walk alone; usually people don’t walk at the same speed.”

He has always been fascinated with the parks in Dodge City; especially the one at Beeson Road plus all the pretty yards, flowers and trees he sees. Everett enjoys visiting with people and is continually amazed with the courtesy that drivers have for walkers. With a laugh he said, “I’ve never challenged a car.”

For several years, Everett did income tax for people involved with Mexican- American Ministries. Before that, he was administrator for American Pipeline for 33 years. Nine years was spent teaching and coaching in towns such as Arnold, Ness City, Haviland and Mullinville. Everett felt teaching was very rewarding.
