Art is Ageless winners awarded at Carnegie Center reception

Alle with "Sunflowers"

 

Artist Alle Craig and sculptor Mary Spurgeon are among the first place winners of the Presbyterian Manor of the Plains 2007 Art is Ageless Exhibition in cooperation with the Dodge City Area Arts Council. Craig won a first place award for her drawing “Sunflower Medley,” and snagged another first place award for her painting “Meditation.”

Mary Spurgeon, the Oklahoma artist who sculpted the now famed eight-foot statue of Wyatt Earp in downtown Dodge City, won a first place award for her statue of a cowboy and his horse, “Prairie Ponderance” She also took a third place award for a miniature of the Wyatt Earp statue.

Other first place winners include:

  • Kae Bryant in the needlework category for her piece “Vintage Stitches”
  • Louise Lau in the fiber arts category for “Funky Purses”
  • Norma Schoen in mixed media for “Jewelry Sculpture”

Second place winners were:

  • Kathleen Foster, drawing, “Old House”
  • Helen Carlson, painting, “Deep Forest”
  • Lowell Tasset, sculpture, “Symbol of St. Theresa”
  • Vivian Goetz, needlework, “latte Quilt"
  • Betty Thomas, fiber arts, “Pink & Purple Afghan.”

Third place winners include:

  • Phyllis Ruth Gattenby, painting, “Spring Meadows,” and also for photography, “Appaloosa Ponies at Parsons”
  • Hermena Skalsky, needlework, “Quilt”
  • Vera Hamm, fiber arts, “Baby Bonnets”

The Art is Ageless exhibit was held at the Carnegie Center for the Arts, 701 Second Avenue, through Sept. 8. Winners of the contest were announced at a reception at the Center.

Sponsored by Presbyterian Manor of Mid-America and Western Plains Medical Complex, the contest for artists over the age of 65 drew 40 entries submitted by 22 artists.

Slides of the first place winners have been sent to Wichita to be judged with winners from 15 Presbyterian Manor locations. Winners will be selected for the Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s 2008 Art is Ageless Calendar, occasion cards, and note cards.
