The organization was founded in September 1990. In the 70-year history of guide dogs and the 30-year history of service dogs in America, it was the first program to provide both types of canine assistants from the same facility. While 43 percent of KSCS’s placements have remained in Kansas, today the organization has working dog/owner teams in 27 different states and puppy raisers in 10 different states. KSDS relies on contributions from individuals, corporations, service clubs and memorial bequests. The largest corporate sponsor is Hills Pet Nutrition in Topeka. Hills provides free dog food to all KSDS puppy raisers, dogs in training and breeding stock. KSDS assistance dogs are valued at $15,000 each. Enjoying the tour were residents: Betty Moore, Ora Allen, Imogene Kamphaus, Bob Sanneman, Jeane Hanson Hammel, Wayne Hammel, Fay Wirt, Charlotte Gilbert, Kenneth Carlson, Firmin Esslinger, George Whetstine and Judy Riek, and Activities Director Dawn Langvardt.
