Executive Director Mike Derousseau says the improvements signal the culture change underway for Presbyterian Manor, continuing its move toward a more home-like environment for its residents, regardless of their level of living.
“Today’s older population is more vital and active than ever,” says Derousseau. “To accommodate them, we’re changing to incorporate the role of social and service delivery aspects in the well-being of our residents.” Derousseau. The groundbreaking is designed to launch the building phase and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Clay Center Manor. Shaping the Future of Clay Center and Residents
Also announced that day will be the results of the $400,000 capital campaign, titled Shaping the Future, with recognition given to major donors, says Leon Mugler, honorary chair of the campaign. “We launched this campaign with the idea that nothing worthwhile happens without concerted effort,” says Mugler. “This campaign, and the generosity of our donors, proves what can be accomplished when people care.” Mugler’s wife Eva spent 18 months at Presbyterian Manor prior to her passing in 2005.
The campaign was launched in November 2007, for expansion and renovation of Presbyterian Manor of Clay Center, 924 Eighth Street. Capital improvements will add nearly 6,500 square feet to the existing 35,000 square feet, with additional renovations to 11,000 square feet of current space. Planned improvements include:
- A new wellness/therapy center
- Private accommodations for two residents
- Semi-private accommodations for four residents
- Remodeled spa rooms on three floors
- A new multi-purpose room and chapel
- An expanded dining area
- An expanded education center
The improvements are evidence of Presbyterian Manor’s shift from a medical model, upon which the organization was founded in 1949, to a model focused on a broader set of resident needs and customer expectations. In addition to the quality of life it offers to area seniors, Presbyterian Manor is among Clay Center’s top employers, employing 65 and infusing $1.2 million in payroll annually into the economy.
The expansion and renovation is scheduled for completion in 2009. General contractor is Altman Charter Company from St. Louis, MO, and the architect is PKHLS Architecture from El Dorado, KS.

Groundbreaking ceremonies will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a community barbeque from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., and Manor tours from Noon-3 p.m.
