Residents attending a recent Manor Educational Society meeting received information about breast cancer awareness. Speakers were Director of Nursing Debra Forshee and Pat Gilbert, daughter of resident Bill Taddkien and daughter-in-law to resident Charlotte Gilbert. Debra and Pat are breast cancer survivors. Forshee presented facts and statistics about breast cancer and the importance of early detection and regular mammograms. She and several family members participated in the Susan B. Komen Race of the Cure in Wichita Sept. 27. Their team name was “The Girls in Pink.” She gave everyone at the meeting a self-breast exam reminder calendar and a shower card. Gilbert talked about the project she is doing to raise money for the Relay for Life Foundation. She purchased four truck loads of old band uniforms from two Salina high schools at a school surplus auction. With the old band uniforms she makes tote bags and stadium blankets. She recycles every part of the uniform except the collars. All money the she makes she gives to the Relay for Life. Refreshments of pink sugar cookies and pink M&M candy were served at the close of the program.
