Recent News

Jan Germann of Morganville won the handmade quilt at this year’s Banquet to benefit the Good Samaritan Fund.

On Tuesday, April 29th the 18th Annual Presbyterian Manor Banquet to benefit the Good Samaritan Fund took place at the Clay Center Methodist Church Family Life Center. The banquet consists of a buffet style meal with the smoked pork loin catered by Rays Apple Market of Clay Center, and dessert.

Each guest was entered in a door prize drawing. Through out the evening, 99 door prizes were given away. Door prizes were provided by generous businesses and individuals in the community. This did not include the 10 auction items that were auctioned off in the middle of the evening and the nine items that were drawn for at the end of the evening.

The handmade quilt drawing is always a highlight of the Banquet. This year’s quilt was hand stitched and quilted by 14 community volunteers—one group worked on the quilt top and another on the hand quilting.

A unique auction item donation was made during the live auction for an even more unique reason. This year the Manor Banquet fell on the second anniversary of the evening that County Commissioner Mike Spicer was shot while flying his airplane, originally on the way to the Manor Banquet. Mr. Spicer had taken off with the intention of flying to arrive for the Manor Banquet when he was called by the Sheriff’s office to search for a suspect from the air. He didn’t make it to the banquet that year, instead he was at the hospital after he was shot in the head. In honor of his ordeal, Mr. Spicer and the company for which he works, donated a 30 minute flight for the evening of the Banquet only to be auctioned off. The winning bidder was able to take two friends with them on the flight and enjoyed a peaceful and beautiful sunset while seeing the sights of Clay County.

The Banquet is always festive and fun and this year was no exception with a wedding anniversary and a birthday celebrated that evening. Traditionally, the highlight of the evening is the drawing for the handmade quilt. This year was no exception, and the winner was Jan Germann of Morganville. Mrs. Germann was very excited on her win, “I can’t believe I won the quilt, I never win anything!”

The Banquet raised assistance for the Good Samaritan Fund of Presbyterian Manor that supports care and services for residents who outlive their financial resources. This fund supports care and services for residents who outlive their financial resources. This equates to more than $4 million a year of un-reimbursed care and services needing Good Samaritan support. “On behalf of the residents who will benefit, we appreciate the support of the residents of Clay County and the surrounding area,” stated Mike Derousseau, executive director.
