Lena Metcalf always available when needed

By Sue Gregg Activities director

Lena Metcalf has lived at the Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor for five years, and she is glad for the freedom and security the Manor provides.

Lena decided to move into the Manor after her husband passed away and it became increasingly clear to her that she no longer wanted to worry about the upkeep of a home. She credits the move as being one of the best things she has ever done.

Involved in numerous groups and activities, Lena is known throughout the Manor. She is a member of the Twilighters, a group of older adults who spread joy through song to other residents. She is also a floor representative on the Resident Council and faithfully leads devotions for Health Care Center residents. During her spare time, Lena enjoys reading and crocheting and attending church services at Friends Church.

Lena, who was born in Missouri, has spent the majority of her life in Kansas. Having first lived in the Dexter/Cedar Vale area, Lena moved to Ark City 44 years ago with her husband, Cecil, who accepted a job here. Lena then started her career at the Ark City hospital as a surgical assistant — a job she held for 22 years.

Lena’s family includes two daughters, Cecelia and Patricia, and a son, Gary, who got his name from a street in Winfield. When Lena was pregnant and living in the Cedar Vale area, she and her mother rented an apartment in Winfield because her doctor would not make a “delivery” in the country. Going down Gary Street day after day, Cecil told Lena “that’s the name I want for my son.”

Since retirement, Lena spends a great deal of time volunteering with the Ark City hospital’s auxiliary. She has now been a volunteer for 22 years, the same amount of time she worked at the hospital.

If her involvement at the Manor and in the community says anything about Lena, it’s that she’s always willing to help wherever she’s needed. We certainly thank her for that.
