Have fun while being a Good Samaritan

Older Kansans have been coming home to Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor for 32 years. The Manor’s parent company, Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, was founded in the 1940s, so we have a long history of providing compassionate care as a mission-driven, nonprofit corporation.

The mission steers our decisions, from the PMMA board of trustees undertaking corporate planning to the Arkansas City Manor’s Advisory Committee giving input on remodeling for the health care center to create a more resident-centered home-like atmosphere.

An important result of the mission is caring for residents even when economic times are tough. Each PMMA location has a Good Samaritan Fund that assists local residents who have outlived their resources through no fault of their own. As our elders age, their needs change and their resources may dwindle. As a result, some come to rely on government programs which do not keep pace with escalating health care costs. The Manor’s Good Samaritan Fund fills in that gap.

Over the past several years, PMMA has provided an average of $4 million a year of unreimbursed care for these elders. Systemwide, nearly 32 percent of residents in assisted living and health care combined are unable to pay the entire cost of care. Last year, PMMA provided financial assistance to 502 residents for which no payment was received. The need increases as government reimbursement decreases, such as the recent Medicaid cuts.

It is through support from local citizens to the Good Samaritan Fund that we are able to ensure our residents’ peace of mind that they will receive continued quality care year after year.

You can help raise money for the Good Samaritan Fund while at the same time enjoying the spring weather, getting some exercise and having a little friendly competition by participating in the Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor golf tournament. It is the Manor’s largest annual fundraiser for the Good Samaritan Fund. Even if you don’t play golf, you can participate! We’ll have some new contests that nongolfers can take part in; volunteers are always welcome, too.

The Dick Metz Memorial Golf Classic is Saturday, May 1, at the Arkansas City Country Club. In addition to the scramble format, the event includes a putting contest and an awards banquet. There will be other prizes and surprises, as well, including a ball drop open to all.

Companies partnering with the Manor to sponsor the annual tournament include Home National Bank, McDonald Computer Services and Union State Bank. We appreciate their support!
