Home | Recent News | Arkansas City | Ark City Manor 01 Oct 2007 Seniors at Ark City Manor as “Wired” as Younger GenerationsWhen it comes to technology, some seniors are as wired as younger generations. At Presbyterian Manor, residents are using it to do the same sorts of things younger folks are – as e-mail to keep in touch with friends and family; to shop; to tend to their financial accounts and do their taxes; to increase their knowledge and do research; to share funny jokes and cartoons; and to conduct genealogy searches. Take Bill Stewart, who was born and raised in Ark City and lived in Amarillo, Tex., for 50 years. He worked for the railroad. At 88, he’s somewhat of a “tech guru.” He taught other seniors how to use computers for about five years at Cowley County Community College. This is a man who doesn’t allow technology to best him. Though he doesn’t use a cell phone, he does have a digital video player. He has a compact disc player he uses to listen to every kind of music from classical to jazz…”everything,” he says, “but hard rock.” He also has used the world wide web for educational purposes, basically to use tutorials of new computer programs, “ he explains. Charles Cleghorn, soon to be 84, likes to keep up with his nieces, cousins and friends in places like California, Colorado, and South Dakota. His computer allows him to do that on a monthly basis. If he didn’t have the computer to do that, he probably would not be as connected. “I used to have good longhand, but I don’t anymore. I can’t imagine writing letters by hand. I just wouldn’t do it at all if I had to. So I use my computer mostly for e-mail.” He was born in Parsons, raised in Winfield, but spent years working in the oilfields from Texas to Montana. He says he doesn’t play games on his computer. “They cheat,” he jokes. He has done some shopping for clothes on the internet and he’s used it to do research. He uses a CD player “which I’ve had forever to listen to mostly country western, the old stuff,” he says. He can watch VHS tapes on a video recorder. It is clear that he gets a lot of enjoyment out of the capacity he has on his computer and admits that he probably spends too much time using it.
